Written part of the state exam and exam topic selection have been deleted for students who started their program on the basis of the curriculum of 2017.
State Exam consists of two parts:
- Defending thesis (presentation on thesis, followed by answers to questions and remarks),
- Oral exam in 4 topics selected selected by the internal supervisor
Submitted theses are evaluated by the Department. The internal supervisor decides 4 topics of the written and oral topics of the comprehensive exam on the basis of reviews received (making review takes about 2 weeks) and the thesis that are organically related to the thesis.
The Department will send the review in email.

Procedure of State Exam
The slides of the presentation (PPT) will have to be uploaded to the computer and try it before the examination starts. Any technical problem occurs (the lack of available format or video codec) is the student’s responsibility. Suggested: PPT version 2016, video: HD Ready resolution, AVI container format.
Please use the official University of Debrecen PPT formula to the PPT presentation:
- ud_ppt_template_1.pptx
- ud_ppt_template_2.pptx
- ud_ppt_template_3.pptx
- ud_ppt_template_4.pptx
- ud_ppt_template_5.pptx
A student shall have to upload the presentation and the possible video to E-learning system until 16 Dec 2024. Please note that the maximum file size that can be uploaded to E-learning system is 20 MB. Presentation: the maximum size is 20 MB, video: the maximum size is 20 MB.
Each student shall have a 15 minute presentation time frame for the performance that will include a 10-minute presentation of the thesis and a 5-minute period of time to respond the reviewer’s questions of their thesis.
Slides of the thesis presentation:
- minimum 10 and maximum 15 slides to the thesis
- minimum 2 and maximum 5 slides as a reflection to the review
Afterwards the examination board will ask questions in the 4 State Exam topics. A student shall prepare separate slides in advance with the minimum of 1 or the maximum of 2 slides/question.
During the presentation of a thesis the task and own results have to be presented. In case of the answers to the topics technological depths are expected to be discussed.
The state examination board evaluates a student’s performance:
- the thesis defence
- the correctness of the answers
- the professional quality of communication (correct use of terms)
- brief but precise wording
- efficient use of the time available.
Treatment of concealed theses:
- Thesis uploading is carried out to a separated E-learning topic with restricted access (access is exclusively possible with the email address provided in Neptun system).
- Paper-based administration is carried out according to the protocols so far.
- A student’s presentation and defence are usually provided in public except for the presentation and defence of a concealed thesis.
Calculation of Diploma Grade (D):
For graduands who completed the Mechatronics Engineering BSc program according to the curriculum of 2017 or after:
D= 0.3×B+0.2×C+0.5×A, where
A: Average of comprehensive exams (A=0.3 x mathematics comp. exam+0.7 x mechatronics comp.exam)
B: Average of the grades of the 4 oral topics of the state exam
C: Grade for defending thesis
On the basis of the calculated average grade the classification of the award:
Outstanding 4.81 – 5.00
Excellent 4.51 – 4.80
Good 3.51 – 4.50
Satisfactory 2.51 – 3.50
Pass 2.00 – 2.50
Award with Distinction:
An award with Distinction is permitted where a student obtained grade 5 in all subjects of the state exam. The average of thesis grade, his/her exam grades and mid-semester grades during his/her studies is at least 4,00. Moreover, he/she is not permitted to have a grade worse than grade 3 during his/her studies.
